Upanayanam is the sacred thread ceremony marking a boy's initiation into Vedic learning. This is one of the most important samskaras (life rituals) in the Hindu tradition. The boy receives the sacred thread (Yagnopavitam) and is taught the Gayatri Mantra. The ceremony includes Ganapati Puja, Punyahavachanam, Homam, and the actual Upanayana ceremony. It traditionally marks the beginning of Brahmacharya (student life).
